Engaging ADR

Today marked the first day in the studio for recording ADR and foley. Using Blake's asset list we set about getting the first of the foley done. The microphone we used was the AKG 414, it has a great flat response chart that we can have a close to realistic sound for. We recorded the lighter sparking up, the breathing in and a light crackle of the ciggie. We also recorded a few fleshy thwap sounds to mix in with some already recorded footsteps to make them sound more like the bare footed Damo.

The lighter sound is a mixture of sounds from an old fuel lighter with the flip open top. The opening closing and striking sounds were all recorded and I feel that the best sound was actually the opening sound. The breathing of the cigarette was created from breathing in through fingers, while the crackle was made from old tape. A mixture of the two in a short possibly 1 second clip should be enough when mixed to have an authentic cigarette crackle sound. After that we recorded a fair amount of the ADR for both Darren and Damo in this session, ahead of schedule for the next session.

The team worked well achieving a lot but it could have been better, we were a bit distracted after a long day so the work we achieved was sub-par to what we could have achieved even though we are ahead of schedule. I think this is due to the fact that the schedule was made for 2 people and we ended up having 3. Having an extra hand and ideas/input has helped move the project closer to completion. This is of course not a bad thing. Next session we should be able to finish off the ADR and do the last of the mixing.
