Qualities Of A Leader - CIU 111 Week 12

Week 12 Creative Leadership The type of leader you are defines your ability to work, and also the ability of your employees. Being the tallest tree in a forest does not make you better than the rest of the forest. Often in my experience in hospitality I would find myself at a crossroads of how to take any certain situation. Should I be firm or should I be lenient? The decision I make could make or break the working relationship I have with my staff. The role of a leader should not be one of dictation, although it often is, it should be one lead by example. Trust is important between peers, trust in competency in the job, trust in reliability, but most important I think is the trust in the leader and you can’t trust a leader who does not follow his own rules. Emotional Support While working with various types of people you need to take into consideration, their feelings and emotional reactions to what you’re doing/asking. Often I’ve found that supporting people emotionally boosts their motivation to work with you and to do their work better. Small things like asking how they are, or complimenting something on a daily basis can increase happiness and also the effort made at work, providing they are capable of the job. This is because work makes people unhappy most of the time, so keeping everyone in good spirits lets the intrinsic motivation, or self-driving force remains at maximum. While the motivation to do something is mostly at the will of the person, by incentivizing with money, you can gain a slight increase in the work that’s being done. However what most people are looking for in life is acceptance and safety, by incentivizing this instead of money you can create a greater work ethic. Aspects of Leadership To be a leader isn’t just to be in a position of power, it’s your ability to visualize your goal, garner followers and motivate them to join you in reaching it. Personal traits have a huge impact on the quality of a leader. If you are a nice person while also maintaining work flow you will be a better leader than one who dissociates him from the rest. While all leaders have a goal and a drive to reach that goal, not all leaders have a goal that’s for the greater good, and use their ability to motivate for their own goal without the knowledge of the people. Confidence can create an emotional reaction from a follower, because the majority of people naturally want to follow. Showing confidence can also prove to other leaders that you are a leader.
