So last week I got into the studio to record some guide tracks to see what I'm working with. Unfortunately the only studio that was available at the times I was also available was the C24, so I had to deal with only 2 mic inputs. The songs were recorded at her own tempo which was slow and casual, like a typical acoustic guitar player.
I realised then that I wanted to really push the tempo up faster and create some songs that have a more dancey poppy feel to them. After speaking to Laura on the topic of coaching she was happy to learn about how to become more commercially successful. While I don't feel I need to coach her vocal performances as such (she has a real knack for it) I am going to push her on the direction of this album. I'm not happy with recording just an acoustic guitar EP and after a bit of talking neither was she. Take the third song for instance, it was 4:30 minutes long and I felt that it was too long to be a commercial success. I tempo mapped the song and brought it to a comfortable 120 bpm and 3:30 minutes, which is a much better tempo for the song and will be the starting piece for the song I plan to build around it. (Which I will re record at that tempo later)
After doing my case study on Missy Higgins "Steer" I realised what direction I wanted to take the pop songs. Though originally I had looked at taylor swift as references I want to take this song in more of a Missy Higgins style (less country) I want to use similar eq'd guitars and interesting panning elements. I've booked 2 more studio session in the coming weeks in the better studio's in order to re-record the songs at a faster pace so I'll need to get the backing track at least partly finished by then
